The Heart Behind the Story

Jabril was inspired by my little cousin, a funny, loving, and wonderfully unique child on the autism spectrum.

“Oooh dear!” is something he really says when things don't go as planned. Those two little words inspired a whole world of stories.

Oooh Dear Jabril was created for children like him and to remind everyone that we don't all experience the world the same way.

Some children need more time. Some communicate differently. Some feel things a little bigger than others.

And that's what makes each of us unique.

Sometimes the world feels like an “Oooh dear!” kind of place, and sometimes all we need is someone who understands.

The Little Boy Behind the Bear Slippers

Big thoughts. Little words. A whole lot of personality!

Meet Jabril! A funny, loving, curious Puerto Rican and Black 4-year-old boy on the autism spectrum. He loves dinosaurs, his green and purple onesie, his teddy bear slippers, and adventures. You’ll also meet his cousins JoJo, Mimi, King, and CeCe. And let's not forget his pet frog, “Jumpie,” in later adventures.

Jabril is a big thinker with very little words, but he has plenty to say in his own special way!

You Might Hear Jabril Say:

  • “Oooh dear!”When something goes missing or things don't go his way.
  • “But wait!”When he doesn't want to do something or has another idea.
  • “Spin!”Because sometimes you just need a good spin!
  • “Jump!”Time to get moving!

  • “Tickle-wish!”His special way of cheering someone up!

Sometimes Jabril repeats what others say to help him understand or confirm what he's hearing.
